It is a laregly pointless exercise for a daily car, the money you will spend will far outway the cost of buying and nice E36 328i

If you do it on the cheap you end up with a very unreliable car, great for a track days not much use for anything else.

There is however a good section on the forum both in the turbo section and the projects section where people have done mad things, my favourite is the "354i" build, they stuffed a 5.5 litre V8 in and E46, it is a monster

i would go with the m50 b25 lump mate, its a bulletproof 190bhp, plus, later on, if you still want boost, the m50 is one of the best engines for it, over 400whp on stock internals
    1993 E36 BMW 325 TDS with:

    egr delete
    super chipped
boost controller @1.5 5th gear bar boost
    De cat pipe
straight through turbo back, no backbox
hard pipe turbo to induction filter
Pefrormance FMIC with custom mandrel IC piping
Water / methanol injection (being setup)
    increased injector duration (being setup)
    13t turbo upgrade (being setup)
Solid engine mounts, braced front and rear, coilovers, lots of smoke
