    came upon my check control just .... trans failsafe prog
    read handbook which says a malfunction in the auto transmission
    thus selecting 4th gear only !
    any ideas what this could be ??

    IIRC... the place to start is to check your battery is ok. Low batteries can cause all sorts of oddness. After that, unfortunately, it's probably going to be the sort of news you don't want :(

    As always, reading the codes will be the next step.

    It took me the best part off 4 weeks to sort my problem out and it turned out to be the crank sensor. was a cheap fix but diagnostics was the issue. Get a reputable indie with the relevant diagnostics software to have a look at it. Have a look at my previous thread and you'll see the merry dance I had to dance.

    Charged battery , the problem has gone !
