    Hi,

I was cleaning my engine and pulled out a plastic filter. I cannot for the life of me get it back into place! Any help much appreciated.

Also what is it and whats it protecting?

    Thanks,

Those filters are known as leaf catchers, and, well, catch the leaves that fall onto the windscreen and down past the wipers. Below the leaf catcher filters are the water drains. See numbers 6 and 7 for the filters and numbers 10 and 11 for the water drains in the link to realoem.com below. Failing that, search for 'BMW leaf catchers' for information:

RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog

I have no idea how to fit them as I don't have an E87. There are two leaf catchers on the E87, so it's worth taking the cover off the one on the other side to see how that one is fitted.
