Cool 2005 E87 120d Fuel leak after filling the tank.

Hello all.

I'm new to the forum but have own a couple of bimmers.
I recently replaced my 330d sport for a 120d sport and added a superchip to get back to similar performance (and ecomony as it happens).

However, I filled the tank for the first time and noticed that a small pool of fuel appeared in front of the read wheel. Ok I thought a warm day and I must have filled it to the brim. On the 2nd fill up, same thing happened, but this time a pulled the nozzle before it did a cut off (about 44 litres from when the warning light came on).

Does anyone know of a common fault or recall for the e87 about this sort of thing? I have seen one forum talk about this on a 3 series and it was a cracked overflow pipe.

Any ideas?

Thanks Terry.

Not something I have heard of before, all I can say is it will require putting up on a ramp and then checking for signs of the leak, if it's not obvious then either a top up of fuel or possibly angling the car on the ramp should make the culprit leak again.

What side does the puddle gather on?

And have you ever had to have the fuel pump out or fuel sender since you have owned the car?

My mates 2007 3 series had developed a hole in the fuel tank and they had a similar story to yours.

Did you buy the car from BMW? If so they would replace the fuel tank under warranty. Need to get it sorted asap

It's very likely to be your tank breather, nothing serious. It's very common on the E9X and has been well documented on the E8X also.
Yours may be a recall issue, if not just leave it parked on the level after a tank fill.

Thanks to everyone who has responded.

The pool of fuel is on the filler side just in front of the OSR wheel, I bought the car from a independent dealer and I have taken it back and they say it's coming from the breather pipe - nothing to worry about, I have heard one story about a cracked breather pipe?

The VOSA site (good reference site for recall info) does not have any recall information on the e87 model referencing a recall for this problem? Does anyone have a specific reference on a recall?

Thanks Terry.
