    Hi there,

I have alreadt searched the net and drawn a blank on this one, so i was wondering if anyone could help?

I have a 98 S plate E36 with M52B28 engine, I know that the date of registration suggests the car is after the nikasil era, but need to know when the engine was produced as the timing is very borderline.

I have found serial numbers for the M60 engines online, but nothing for the M52's - i've also phoned the main dealer but as its bank holiday theres only sales staff in today and the 2 clueless advisors i spoke to have never even heard the work Nilasil (shock horror!)

My engine number (according to registration document) is: 9381M098

I'm told by the idependant specialisr who has seen the cat that its Malaysian (sp?) made, I don't know if that had any bearing on the situation?

If some kind sould out there could tell me the date of manufacture and if its going to be Allusil or Nikasil, or even point me in the right direction of whre to look, I would be eternally gratefull....

    Many thanks in advance,

    Sam.

There's an easier way to tell. Have a look at this thread and it will show you how to tell by looking at the car. http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...888/page2.html

Do you know the build date of the car? It should be on a metal plate with the car's colour on the suspension turret.

    Thanks Ian,

I've checked the car out and unfortunately it is a Nikasil block
I am so annoyed as the car is a 98 s-plate, registered Oct 98 so i would've thought this would have escaped the Nikasil problem but unfortunately not, the engine was obviously manufactured during the Nikasil period and the car wasn't registered untill after the cut off date, so I have bought a lemon under false pretences....

This is obviously not going to be cheap to put right.

Thanks to you both - to SBSD for posing the question I was about to ask and to Ian for the reply!
SBSD - Sorry to hear your engine is a Nikasil. I would have thought it would have been replaced whilst still under the warranty unless they replaced it with another Nikisal one, which it looks like they started doing before they worked out the actual problem.
I am looking at buying an E39 528i SE which was first registered in Jan 1998. I am glad I have found out this information before I go to see the car on Weds night. It will sway a lot on my decision to buy or not. I just hope it doesnt have a Nikasil engine cos it looks like a lovely car.

    Mick,

Like yourself I would've hoped the Nikasil engines (well the bad ones at least) would've been out of curculation by now but evidently not.

You've obviously been reading up so you know what to look for, rough uneven idle, low power etc, make sure to look for the nut on the engine too, thats what told me in the end...

Good luck and hope you get yourself a nice motor.

I wouldn't worry about it to be honest. You have bought the car now so you may as well run it. No point in worrying about it now or doing anything about it.

I am quite vocal on the issue and wouldn't buy one myself but there are thousands of nikasil cars out there going strong with huge mileages on them.

You can get big bills on any car so it's not as bad as it seems.

What build date is your car then?

Am I right in the fact that the nut/cover shown on the first pic is a non-nikasil engine, therefore ok?!
