Hello all, I'm Dan, though most people know me as Wig. I'm not one to keep cars for very long, but my present E39 seems to have got under my skin, despite not being my first. This one will be stopping for the forseeable future.
I'm a Mechanic by trade with 20 years on Rolls Royce and Bentley. Means I have a little experience with the V8 and v12 units, though they never ever go wrong in the cars I see.
The current ride is an E39 535I auto, sept 98 build so first of the vanos cars. It's a little bit of a rolling restoration job at the minute, she isn't without issues. Mysterious Wheel wobbles, temperemental gearbox, strange suspension noises and an engine that sounds like a bag of spanners are things still remining to be dealt with. So far I have replaced the ABS unit, repaired the LCM, repaired the cluster, replaced all the brakes and wheel bearings, changed the water pump, rad, expansion bottle, hoses and thermostat and of course carried out a major service including gearbox.
She carries a full and Genuine AC Schnitzer styling pack, although the front bumper spoiler was kindly removed by an MOT station in the brake rollers. I never persued the issue as it was quite badly damaged when I got it. Replacing it is also on the agenda. She did have the Schnitzer type 3 wheels, but somebody decided to help themselves to them. Handling wise, she is on Bilstein shocks, AVO springs, and Eibach anti roll bars. Polybushes coming soon. Absolute dream on the twisty bits.
I would of course like to do a later light upgrade, but Angel Eye headlamps still seem to be vastly expensive to justify for a styling exercise.
