i recently aquired a 2000 318ci and have what appears to be coolant loss from expansion tank, top rad hose is quite hard and red hot, lower hose much cooler, the car warms to operating temp within a couple of miles and needle sits halfway, had a 316i go just the same a few year ago then gasket went, any ideas??

Well ordinarily the top hose will be hot and the bottom cold anyway, getting up to temp in a couple of miles sounds about right, I would start by finding the leak, fixing it then bleeding the system and go from there

Thanks mate but the engine seems to be pushing the coolant out of the expansion tank cap, like there's too much pressure, also lots of pressure when take off oil cap-enough to spit oil everywhere, cheers
