Hope somebody out there can help as I am new to the Forum.
Have had starter motor problems on my 728i 1996 for the last 18 months and I am now on my 4th starter in 18 months. The latest one is only 5 weeks old.Same old story, key in and click!!nothing happens, call out engineer and he taps the motor with hammer and bingo!! car starts and runs for god knows then it happens again. My BMW specialist now advises that he is unable to get a replacement for the 4th time and that it must be something else.He suggests it may be the main fly wheel, worn cogs or what have you and I will be into him straight away for 6 hours labour to drop the gearbox to inspect the wheel!! and that`s before he starts. I am told by another mechanic that you can inspect the main wheel by removing the starter and turning the wheel with a screwdriver without dropping the gearbox!!
What do I do now? If, as my BMW specialist commented, that it is highly unusual for two starter motors to have the same recurring problem, why did they not think of the main wheel earlier.Could it be a bad batch of starter motors, but I would think highly unlikely.
    Any comments would be appreciated!!

    Welcome.

Any idea what make these starters are? I'm thinking possibly cheap re-manufactured ones that are not up to the job. You may be better off trying a used OEM one from a breaker. Also make sure all the associated wiring connections are good.

If tapping the body of the motor gets it going then there certainly aren't any flywheel problems.

Thanks for your response, and no, i don`t now what make the motors are but will be finding out soon as independant will be taking the present motor off to inspect the flywheel. I have spoken with the main agent and priced a new!! motor at £ 205 +vat and they want the old motor back most likely to refurbish? I paid circa £350 originally for my first replacement motor and these guys are Ex main agent mechanics set up on their own specialising in BM`s.Think I have been ripped off!! What do you think? At the moment it starts but I am waiting for the moment it doesn`t!!
Thanks again, any comments are most appreciated.
