    Hi, my name is Bruce, 24 from Bristol

    I currently own a 406 HDi and i'm very bored of it now.

    I am looking at the E36 3-Series Coupe with the 1.8 4-Cylinder petrol engine.

    I'm not massiverly fussed anymore by performance, having owned 2-3 Turbo petrol cars with 240-260hp its not overly important to me anymore.

    The 318I S Coupe seems to be reasonably economical and retain some performance.

    How do you guys rate the 1.8 (1.9) engine?

    Id love the 320 6-pot but dont think funds would allow nor the increased running costs for an extra 10hp, is it worth it?!

    I've seen a few 318I S's on eBay/Autotrader and there seem to be vary appearance and spec levels?

    Things ive noticed;

    Some have colour-coded bottom halfs of Front & rear bumpers and side skirts?

    Boot Spoiler?

    ECC?

    Onboard computer?

    Front Fogs?

    I cant seem to find any 'spec/trim levels' though?

    What do you think of this one? It was 1495 upto yesterday but has recently dropped to 995!

    Let me know what you think?

    hey mate the m44 is a great lump and i dont think the 320i is worth the extra fuel etc over the 1.9 as the m44 can easily be remapped to 150 bhp +. The car your looking at seems nice though is there some damage to the right side skirt just in front of the rear wheel? Maybe just the light..

    The trim levels are base se and sport i think. thet one looks like a base :-)

    Good to have you with us

    Thanks Freddybear,

    I did spot that bit of scuffing on the image. Not seen it in person yet though.

    Hmmm. Tbh, Id be happier with one with OBC, ECC & the front Fogs.

    Welcome to the site Bruce

    I have owned both a 318i E36 and a 318iS E36 - I own the latter now and have done for over a year now.

    The 318i does have a bit of power and is good enough for motorways etc, however the 1.9 318iS engine is a really sweet engine, you have to rev it to get the power but its a really nice sounding engine, quiet on cruises, aggressive when you put your foot down.

    I would say if you can get a 318iS within your budget then it is by far the better choice. Fuel economy-wise they're pretty much the same, and I manage over 35mpg easily in my car on a regular basis and when being really careful on the pedal, have managed early 40s.

    Good luck in your car search

    I should mention I need to trade in my Pug, so needs to be a dealer willing to part-ex etc.

    The ti is compact? Not too keen on that looks wise really.

    I think within 60 mile radius of Bristol is my limit for travelling unless its a minter etc.

    Budget of £1500.

    Id go for the later (1.9) engine then. 35mpg is a decent figure - Happy with that.

    Just a few questions;

    1. How hard and how much does it cost to get the OBC retrofitted?
    2. Can the ECC be retrofitted?
    3. Do you buy or get sprayed lower halfs of the front bumper/rear bumper and sills?
    4. How hard are the fogs light to install?

    Thanks
