    Hi
Just joined the site and not currently a BMW owner. Have been thinking about buying for some time now but could really do with some advice from those in the know. You'll have to forgive my ignorance as I honestly know little about BMW especially the E numbers that I do find confusing.

Anyhow, can someone direct me on the forum to a section where I can get info with regards to buying a high mileage 3 series coupe or better still convertible. Never purchased a high mileage vehicle ever so have to admit that it is very daunting looking at 3 series cars with clocks reading upwards of 90,000 on them ! I'm looking at models around the 2001 and younger age, price of course being the governing factor. Seen some very nice looking cars but it really worries me what I could be buying when the mileage is so high. Things like bearings and suspension and all the other things that aren't necessarily engine related or indeed visible.

Any advice and pointers would be great. Thanks.

Welcome to the site The 3-series you'll be looking at will be the E46.

90,000 miles is absolutely nothing to worry about on a BMW

Have a look here for a guide on the E numbers what they mean etc - http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...thread-t22588/

Below are a couple of threads regarding what to look out for on E46's.

    buying guide???
    2003 E46 325i SE buying advice

Could also be worth browing the E46 section too

    Good luck in your search!

Ok so after a few "family" issues here am finally back on the E46 trail. Have found a very clean looking 2002 330ci sport auto at a local dealer. Has 100k on the clock, 2 owners from new and FBMWSH. He wants £6500 for it. Just still a tadge concerned with some of the posts I read about nightmare stories with things going wrong and the expense to put it right. Having never entered the world of high mileage cars before I'm still a bit hesitant about dropping current car with 15k on the clock and taking on a 3 series with 100k. I only do around 4k a year at the moment so fuel costs aren't really gonna be a big issue, it's just the psychological thing maybe of buying high miles and worrying it's nearing the end of its useful economical life !

Not sure if I should I have better faith in the brand and the age/miles and let my heart rule my head? What you reckon? God how I hate changing car !! lol

    hi welcome to the fourm.

if your thinking of spending £6,500 on a 02 e46. i would just shop about ie.. auto trader ex fleet cars. but also i think you could pick up a newer plus less miles on the clock for your money if you not in that much of a rush to buy one. it may just pay to shop about. all the best with the hunt

all the best with your hunt, i know i would rather have a bmw with 1 or 2 hundred K on the clock than lesser brands with 15 or 20k, my 92 car has 121k on her and seems strong

Nice one, thank you for your replies, appreciate it. Guess alot of forums, whatever marque of motor are always gonna be littered with negative posts cos that's the nature of forums. So it's always good to read the good posts as well.

Regards the car I was looking at, yeah it does seem a bit pricey but to be honest I haven't seen anything on the autotrader that is much cheaper. Fancied the face lift model but it starts going into high 7 grand bracket which is not really a price I want to pay. But, no hurry as such so will keep hunting. The dealer one though is near mint, couldn't believe it had 100k on it ! First glance I thought 50k tops. Does come with a warranty so that may well be worth £500 ish? I shall try and get him nearer the £6k mark, be happy at that.
