    hey there peeps,

just bought a 1999 E46 316i from my bro! i loved it since i first layed eyes on it about 3 years ago as its mint, its 1 of my fave colours, (silver) no body mods but its got back seat tv's n a naughty sound system! my brothers in the army most of the time so the car was just sittin there apart from when he drove it t base (germany) or my pa occationaly used it, to my disgust i might add!
after begging him t sell it to me for a year SOLID he offered it to me for £1000, i naturaly accepted. the day i got the cash together to give to him he called me with a spot of bad news... someone had bumped into the door, over-opening it as he was getting out at the petrol station to fill up!, Gutted!!
he told me he had already had the repair quoted by a good source, he told him itd cost £700 to get it lookin good as new so because of this my bro told me i could have it for £300 so id still be spending the 1000 but if i could get it done cheaper, better for me! i ended up gettin for a staggering £87!

so to recap; 1999 316i, mint with headrest tvs and bad boy sound system for £387!!!!!!!

but there are a couple minor probs, which brings me to why i have joined! i have joined to gain some knowledge on how to fix and maintain my new pfide and joy!!

    any help/knowledge welcome!!

ive tried searching e46 but it comes up with other models??

as a noob to not only this site but also to bimmers i have minimal understanding of what E46 actualy means. ive been told the 'e' stands for evolution but thats about the extent of my knowledge lol!? so now i have 2 questions...

    1. does e46 reffer to a group of models?
    2. if yes to the above would that not mean that all the models in a group use the same parts etc??

sorry if i sound a bit stupid but i was always told ''if you dont ask, you dont get''

that's right, if you dont ask, you dont get.
don't be embarrassed or feel sorry
cocky ones with knowledge is far worse than polite ones asking questions..
    anyways.. regarding the questions,

    1. does e46 reffer to a group of models?

Yes, it is the name for the generation (line up) code.
Among e46 3 series, there are many different types of models mainly distinguished by engine size.
From 316i (1895cc 105ps 77kW 104bhp) to M3 GTR street model, many different types of e46 3 series form up the line ups.

e46 were produced from 1998 to 2007. I believe it is one of the best sellilng production car in all lines ups in BMW, and they are beautiful and drives superbly.

    2. if yes to the above would that not mean that all the models in a group use the same parts etc??

Well, most models in the same line up are based on same body chassis, so they tend to share the same parts. However, this depends on many variations such as difference in engine model, extra options and small touches on exterior to distinguish superior models.(For example my 630i has round exhaust tips whereas 645/650i models have oval shape exhaust tips)

As e46 is one of the most popular BMWs around, you find it fairly easy to get parts from after markets compare to other lines ups such as 1 series or 6 series.

Your 1999 316i seems to be the very first model of e46 line. It features M43 BMW engine that was also used in e36 316i, 318i, e34 518i and e36/4 z3 1.8.
Just to let you know, for 3 series models, there are
    E21 (1975-1983), E30 (1982-1992.5), E36 (1992.5-2000), E46 (1998-2007), E9X (2005-2011), F30 (2012- ) and some special version+M division cars.
All BMW cars are very prestige and has value for its name. They are all beautiful machines IMO and I wish you enjoy your BMW.
