Hi, my name is ben (a bit obvious ) and looking to buy a bmw 5series e39. Want to go for a diesel really and had my eyes set on a 530td manual. But today I took a 525td auto out and was surprised. So come on here looking for advice really.

Looking for a nice family car and to be honest haven't got a big budget. Any advice etc would be great.

    Thanks ben

    Hi Ben,
I had an E39 525 tds and took it to nearly three hundred thousand miles. I now have the later E60 and the E39 was a much more reliable car. It handled well, was well built and performed reasonably well. It was a little heavy on suspension bushes but that may have been my spirited driving style. I have had five series bmw for the last 15 years and the e39 will take some beating. They are very good value now but I would go for either the later 525 d or the 530 d rather than the tds model.
    Cheers
    Jim

Hi jim, thanks for the reply. My budget is low at around £2500 max. Confused are all the diesels turbo'd? I was looking at a 03 plate today. Need something this week as selling my car so need to replace it. I have had 3 series before e36 and e46 but all been petrol. And not big enough in back for my 3kids.

Just don't want to make a mistake getting wrong model etc. The one I looked at today at m spec dials but couldn't notice anything else? Is that normal. Will try upload photo I took.

    Hi Ben,
All the diesels have a turbo. The early ones are the tds which is the older engine. On an 03 plate it will be the later more powerful diesel which is also smoother. Looking at the picture it looks like an SE model. I have had a couple of three series but always go back to the fives. You should get a nice one on your budget but buy on condition and service history. They hide there miles really well so don't worry if it's done a few. As I said I took mine to three hundred thou and it's still going strong. They are not the most economical but mine used to average about 36 mpg and more on a run. Auto will do a bit less. The six cylinder engines sound really nice as well.
    Cheers
    Jim

    Thanks jim,

It's a 525d SE so your correct lol, it has full service history at

    10,000
    20,000
    30,000
    50,000
    64,000
    78,000
    86,000
    93,000
    103,000
    115,000
    134,000 jan 2014

Had a new turbo last year as well, really wanted a 530 with higher spec but this seems a really genuine straight car. With only a few bits needed to get mint again. Any suggestions seem ok got it to £2000with mot till sept but no tax. 3month basic warranty etc.

The mileage is not bad and although the three litre would be a little quicker there is not a lot in it. You could get it mapped with the money you save. Good ones with reasonable mileage are getting harder to find. If it drives nice with out any knocking suspension and pulls nicely it's worth a punt.
    Cheers

Put deposit down on a 03plate 530d auto with full service history, 13months mot 6months tax, very clean in silver, black leather. Picking it up tomorrow can't wait the drive was so smooth.

Nice one matey. I really rate the E39 and the 530D will be cracking. My only advice would be to change the oil regurly and not sure if they have swirl flaps. If they do remove them..em joy your new motor
    Cheers

How do I know if it has swirl flaps and are they easy to remove? Loving it! Lol.

Also is it worth fitting a egr bypass/blank??
