    Morning,

Just bought a 2004 318 Touring, couple of questions, when does the cambelt have to be changed, the car has done 60k, how often should I get the oil changed. Also is there any recommendation with regard to 'chipping' the car, to make it slightly more lively. Foinally does anyone know whether the supplied phone kit will talk to a blackberry or nokia phone?

    Many thanks,

    Morning,

the car should tell you when the oilchange and services are due. When you first start the car does it come up with a mileage figure. If so this will count down to the services. It may not be set up with condition based servicing if this does not come up. If this is not the case I would expect it to be between 10 and 15K.

As for the Cambelt I am unsure but if you have the service book for the car it should tell you in there.

Is the phone kit the type with a craddle for the phone or is it through the stereo system.

With regards to chipping I have not had any experince so can't comment maybe someone else has more to say on that subject

    Regards

Hi Phil and welcome to the forum,
As far as I am aware that car has a cam chain as opposed to a cambelt but I 'could' be wrong on this as 04 plate is a few years newer than the last 318 I have worked on which was an 01 plate.
Straight 6 BMW engines normally have cam chains which are a 'life' item and do not need replacing supposedly.

IF it is a cambelt then it should be done around 60-70k miles i would estimate.

You could get the car 'chipped' but Im not sure of the gains you would expect. it would certainly make the car a bit more lively though and may actually improve economy!
This is the place to ask about remaps ...........I know the guy and he is very good at what he does (chipping and remaps).

If you let me know your area I will recommend someone closer.

I doubt the supplied phone kit will talk to a blackberry or Nokia.
The reason being that BMW use Motorola, who are pretty backwards nowadays

    Welcome to the forum Philnewman2002

Your engine is indeed chain driven and like previously mentioned is considered a life time item. You can get the car re-mapped also like mentioned, You would probably be looking at approx 10bhp and 10NM of torque for approximately £350 I reckon, You have to remember it's only a 1.8

You've received the relevant advice above and there's nothing left for me to add.

Thanks for the advice chaps, get the car tomorrow, so will let you know how it goes, one thing that hasn't been answered, Oil change intervals, I've never been for letting things run around for more than 10,000 miles without an Oil change, any thoughts on that one?

    Many thanks,

Has the car got FSH or FBMSH, if so you should be able to see from the records what service is due next and the service lights in the dash will indicate when the next service is due.
