lots of posts about swirl flap removal on here, some very detailed and giving prices for doing it yourself or paying a garage to do it.

diesel particulate filter - basically stops a cloud of black smoke being spouted every time you boot the car (think of older diesels) - problem is if they don't periodically do a regen (increase the exhaust temp and burn the soot off), then over years they get blocked up and have to be replaced (3 figure sum!).
Some high mileage diesel owners are now removing them and having a remap done to remove the associated variables within the ecu

Sounds a good idea thanks for the help. So you don't think I would be buying a minefield then if maintained with a few updates shoul be ok for another 50 k or is this wishful thinking. Thanks again

No DPF on E46's, a well maintained engine should run for +200k as said re swirl flaps prevention is better than cure,
maintain more than recommended oil and filter changes along with replacing the oil separator will help keep the engine and turbo in top condition.

Have a read through Tefal's sticky on the BMW E46 diesel engine http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...5537/:thumbsup
