Hi Jon and welcome to BFUK

IMHO I would go with the 318i as others have stated above as I think you get a lot more for your money than you would get for the compact

    Welcome

Sorry to piss on the bonfire here but you say one of the things to note on the IS is:
'small 5p rust spot on wheel arch'
As far as I can see, there are about 3 patches on each arch, all much bigger than a 5p. Fairly common I know, but if the seller words were 'small 5p sized rust spot on one rear arch' then they're lying.

Get the 318iS - it's a much nicer car in my opinion and it has a sweet engine. The leather and nicer alloys on ithe 318iS also add resale value. It looks in great condition and looks like it's been very well looked after.

Well, looks like both cars are out of the water. The 318 has been sold :(

The 316 (worth a look) was terrible, switches missing, stereo removed, ignition barrel loose, rusty springs/exhaust & didn't even get round to starting it....."sorry mate, its just ran out of fuel"!!!
140 mile round trip wasted. But hey ho, I'm more gutted about the 318.

Thats a bitch reference the 318. Maybe it just wasnt meant to be and actually its SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO full of rust its being held together by its paint. Its probably just blown up, got 4 flat tyres, its a cut and shut and got a dead body in the boot.

You were best off giving it a miss anyway.

    Whats your budget? Honestly.

Budget - not a lot, as close to £1k as possible. I've just launched a new business, and money has got a bit tight, as I'm sure you can imagine.

In Stoke on Trent. As you can tell from my journey yesterday, I'm not shy about travelling to see a car, as long as it is as described! Could do with swapping my low mileage Rover 25 (x reg) for an older, higher mileage car if someone was downsizing....

    Found this...

    http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1799678.htm

Looks like a pretty straight car around your budget. There are loads of these around take a good look yourself on the likes of gumtree, ebay, autotrader etc...

My preference is obviously a 318is

Here's a few I found on ebay, there were many more.

Don't know if this is worth a look. A couple of faults but some service history though photos not clear.

This one looks ok but possibly a slight mismatch in paint between drivers door & wing. Not too sure, could just be photo.

This one looks possible too, if a little far away though sounds like it would benefit from getting the bonnet repainted at some time & at least a new power steering belt or possibly replacement pump. Again, some service history & it's cheap.
