    Hi everyone,

    Looking at buying either a 316 compact "P" with 115k or a 318IS saloon "R" with 102k

Both cars have F(BMW)SH, both tidy etc...swaying more towards the 318 as I like the idea of leather and a chain-driven engine (M44) as opposed to belt driven. Having said that, I'm sure the belts have been done.

Anything I should be looking out for when viewing?

    Jon

Well, thats what I thought. I'd have preferred the IS coupe, but I'm being told the 4 door was a last runout before the E46, so a bit rare (has a couple of factory M-Tech bits on it - skirts, spoiler, steering wheel etc)

    Here's the 318IS

And here's the compact (all inclusive of seat covers....ooh, they're luvverly )

As said, 318IS has leather, mtec bits....316 doesn't.

    Thoughts?

It would be the 318is if i had to go for either of those two. The 318is looks clean and tidy. It maybe 1 year older, but when a car gets to this age, there really isnt much difference whether its 13 years old or 14......

The 316 compact doesnt show as much flair as the 318 for some reason.

    Are they the same price?

Yeah, pretty much same price, would be a p/x and same cash. I agree, the 318 looks nicer, fresher. the only things mentioned...

    * airbag light is on
    * small 5p rust spot on wheel arch
    * hole/wear in bolster on drivers seat

these are all easy fixes, I was concerned on the mileage, but with FSH @ 102k, latest service May this year, I'm a bit more settled.

I agree that the 316 looks a bit, well, 'bland' in comparison

Airbag light is likely to be a sensor, rust spot is easily sorted & the seat can be patched up pretty easily. Not things that would put me off seeing as though its got SH.

I didnt want to say "bland" just in case you had already bought it, but yes...."bland".

Well, the 318 may have a spanner in the works, the guy reckons he may have sold it elsewhere! You'd think he'd know for sure first, wouldn't you!
