Hi guys/gals, I'm writing from the left coast of Canada. I have had my E36 for two years now. The car is a Japan spec car (lots of nice used E36s end up here in Vancouver after the Japanese throw them away).

Anyways, the car has no Check Engine light (no surprise to you guys) and an O2 sensor pre-cat and an O2 post-cat! I can't read the owners manual (no read Kanji). If you have a similar car, I would like to know, what the owners manual says about the "CATALYST" light on the instrument cluster. When does it come on? what does it mean? Mine isn't on now, but I am curious. Also, how do you know if things like the O2 sensor have failed? Is hooking the car up to a code reader the only way?

buy a peake research tool, code reader so you wont have to keep sending it in to the shop and charged a small premium each time, i bought one and as they are made in usa probably easy enough for you to get ur hands on. it has been the best thing i could of bought and has paid for itself many times over . usually if there bad u will have fueling issues , lean/rich , missfires etc,

I have access to a friends Peake tool. I would rather eat my left foot with a rusty fork and spoon than take the car to a repair shop!

BTW, I converted the car to a manual shift and installed a 3.25LSD from an E28, so I'm not shy.
