Hi, I've not been able to register my own account as I would need to use the same email address as my son, who is already on the forum.

I'll sort out another email account, but for now as always with new members, I've got a question.

I've just bought a 2001 BMW 520iSE and I'll give it a service and proper check over next week, but as I don't have a proper handbook I wondered if anyone could confirm something for me?

Yesterday, my wife called to say that a yellow engine shaped light was staying on. Later that day, it cleared. I assumed it was an engine management light as she said it seemed to be a bit lumpy in the lower gears.

I downloaded a pdf handbook, but it is for the US version 525, 530 and 540. Should be the same, but within this pdf, the yellow engine light simply means that a service is due? This is only on Canadian models it says.

Is it just a service reminder light on BMW's? On my Scenic, a similar light is a Toxic Fume warning light.

Looking forward to joining the forum properly, it seems a good one.

does sound like engine management light to me mate as far as i know and typically with my car it has a service indicator that runs down over time it will go from 4 green lights to amber to red the closer it gets to a service.....ive seen the light you are on about on my old honda accord...as soon as that came on it went in to limp mode and i couldnt go over 15mph

    Thanks Dan

It does have the service countdown lights too, they are on 4 or 5 green at the moment. I'll have to get the right handbook, as I reckon it could be a EML.

It's a sideways outline diagram of an engine, with a fan on the front and a cap on the top. Do you have this light on your car or have I somehow got a Canadian car?

It was on for a while until she stopped and turned the engine off. It then stayed off after she returned to the car and started up.

What does it mean if it is on then off? Would a diagnostic tell me anything?

I drove it for 3 hours on the m-way when I bought it the day before and it wasn't on. The yellow oil light came on though, so when I got back home I topped it up with GTX as that was all I had available.
    Is there a connection?

I'll get the codes read and would like to buy my own reader, so is BMW OBDII?

The oil was GTX, 10-40. I tried to find out if it was synth or semi or mineral, but no information even on the Castrol site. My son uses Mobil 1 in his BMW, but had none left.

Just went out to try the car, this light came on after a minute and the car became lumpy. I found the handbook in the car and it says that this light denotes a 'deterioration in the exhaust emission control values' and to take it to BMW.

I'm guessing a coil is packing up?

I'm going to retitle this thread if I can, in case members just see it as a really long intro.
