    Hi,

I became the owner of a 1989 635 CSI last Monday, which I had not really planned (not that particular one anyway, the joys of ebay!). It is dolphin grey, with grey leather. It is very low, with some 17" bmw wheels. I think it came that way from the factory.

It seems in fairly good condition (I have yet to see it in the light of day), and I drove it 200 miles back to my home, in the rain, with only one scare which happened after a few miles in the journey. Namely, The car shook violently when reaching 50mph. I had gone faster before, so I was surprised (and started thinking about what the journey would be like in an AA truck!) The type of shaking which actually goes worse initially when slowing down. It was not a wheel balance shake either, but a "S..t, the wheels are coming off" kind. I stopped, checked that the wheels were solidly attached (they were), fuelled up and went again. It did come back at some point (at about 80mph) but nowhere as bad, and higher speeds made it disappear...

Anyway, it is my 4th car (the other 3 are as old or older), 1st bmw, and I am undecided as to whether I will keep it or not. Hopefully, this forum will help me make a decision!

    Thank in advance

    Pascal

Was the shaking on the steering wheel or could you feel it come up through the seats?

You may want to get the prop checked out as soon as possible Also double check the wheels and tyres for buckles and bulges. The fact that you mention different speeds and on slowing down would definately get me looking at the prop before anything.

Someone I know replaced a gearbox on his BMW and they hadn't done something correctly and he had some horrible noises and vibrations. Turned out the prop nuts and bolts had worked themselves loose

    Hi and welcome Pascal

You cant beat those terror drives home in a 'new' (old) car that you think may break down leaving you 100s of miles from home

Glad you made it back. Im sure we can help you get to the bottom of the problems.

If you have some pictures of the car please post them

And if you decide to sell it drop me a pm...as Im very partial to 635s

    Thank you guys.

I like the term "terror drive" because it is exactly what it is!! A funny anecdote is when I came off the motorway, and I was almost home, I pushed it a bit...

And suddenly, there was this horrible burning smell in the car!! I started cursing, wondering what was broken when I got behind a truck, with "motorway maintenance" written on it and full of hot tarmac, source of the smell!

The vibrations have gone, but the battery needed help tonight...now the engine check light has come on! Otherwise, it was going well tonight.

I was recommended a specialist in Southend where I'm taking the car Monday night. I will then know what really needs to be sorted, and I'll decide from there. The truth of the matter is that I was really after a 628, without the front and rear spoilers, with the leather inside. Not that many around unfortunately.

I don't have pictures yet, but it can be seen there... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=230292594805

Its growing on me I must say, looking at it on the drive.

Hopefully, it won't take much to put things right (looks like a new battery is needed), so I can keep it a while. I had a look underneath, and it looks solid for a car this age. The outside is in great shape, and so is the interior (although it was a smoker's car, any tips as to how to get rid of the stale tobacco smell?).

    I'll know more next week.
