Hello, I'm new to this forum. I have a late 1999 316i compact. How can I tell if it's an E36 or E46 ? Also I have a problem. It's been in a garage with a flat battery for three years. I put a battery on it and it started, then stopped. It seems the fuel isn't geting through. Any ideas ? Nick.

Well it should be written on your logbook/servicebook/you can tell the model from looking at it

3 years!!! your petrol has probably turned to varnish.... I think you might need to get yourself some solvents and start cleaning out the fuel system.....

By the way - WELCOME TO THE FORUM...

Thanks for the advice about the fuel turning bad. I'll clean out the system. I guess the pump is accessed after removing the rear seat squab. The reason it's been stored for three years is because it was driven to France when the previous owner bought a house there and just left in the barn, as they decided to buy a left hand drive car. The owner phoned me the other day and said take it away, for nothing ! Outside it's excellent. The inside had a cat living in it but it's now been cleaned having removed all the seats & panels. It doesn't say on the log book or service book if it's an E36 or E46. I'm sorry if I sound stupid but how can I tell ? What's different in the looks ? It was registered in Jan 2000, so built I guess in 1999.

if the front looks like any of the pictures in the signatures (posted so far) in this thread, then it's an E36!
