    Hello,

    Just purchased a 530d auto 2002. Car has done 126k and full service history, car has been well looked after. Bushes have been done recently along with exhaust and some other bits and bobs...however, 1st thing i need to do is get rid of the swirl flaps which is being done by BMW, TVR and Mini specialists | Forza West | Chepstow NP16 5QZ for £120 + vat. They are also replacing the turbo boost vacuum pipe that runs from under the inlet manifold all the way over the top of the engine to the vacuum accumilator down by the turbo and the breather pipe filter for an additional £45 (ish inclusive of vat) I queried an ATF change, due to the costs of the fluids themselves and the need to keep intiial costs down, they will take a sample of the oil for analysis...will let you know about my experience with them.

    The other thing i didnt mention due to the vagueness of it is that my engine is loud! when idle i also get a vibration noise. Im assuming this could be down to possibly the engine mounts or worn insulation?

    anyone got any thoughts of any other work which i should carry out? I had an oil change and flush...oil used was Castrol Edge Premium 5w40.

    I also got one of those aftermarket 'dynavin' style units like;

    3G INTERNET HD DVD GPS car Navigation NAVI BMW E39 E53 X5 E38 sat nav PIP 2-CPU | eBay

    Plenty of functionality and good quality handsfree...the ease of use and general intelligence of the software is the major letdown. if anyone wants any more thoughts on this, just ask.

    cheers,

    Shah

    Check the engine breather as well, the old design clogged up which assisted turbo failure, the new design is a vortex style and is self cleaning.

    How does it run? there are two other issues, 1) the EGR valve and inlet manifold clog up with a mixture of soot and oil from the engine breather and carbonise, eventually it gets really bad this was mine at 74k miles 2005 E61 525d - The first proper service and 2) the injector will be getting a litte worn at that mileage and that can affect the smooth running at idle, you need to get it hooked up to BMW INPA and see what the injectors are up to. I doubt there will be a problem but refurb is the way to go if there is, considerably cheaper

    Finally it is wise to get your gearbox oil changed, Opie oil do a good BMW spec Fuchs oil for £8 a litre, there is a bit if proceedure to change it

    Thanks Matthew for your thoughts. I got car booked in, havnt got the funds for ATF change yet but will get it done next month and prioritise the flapsectomy. The guy where im taking my car did mention he will clean the EGR valve whilst doing the aforementioned job. The car runs really well apart from the noisy and vibrating idle, I drove it on the motorway, cruise control @ 80 mph and got 110 miles from £15 worth of diesel which i was happy with :-) The other thing is that, its sluggish pulling off but im used to that as the previous car i had behaved in the same manner.

    I did ring a BMW specialist (Autotech Newport) who advised they dont carry out a ATF change as the unit is 'sealed for life' - this i dont believe in! A guy who i knew who used to secialise in gearboxes once mentioned to me;

    'If everyone changed their ATF at specified intervals, I would be out of business'

    By the way, I came over from a 2007 CLK 220 CDI, I much prefer the BMW due to the power, comfort and most of all....the limited depreciation! :-D

    I will ask the garage to hook the car up to the computer and find out whats going on....
