To be honest, they are pretty tough and very impressive performers from what I hear. So expect it to feel good and taught and pull well. Laos if the car has a list of invoices, flick through those to get an idea of what work has been carried out on the car.

As for problems on the 330d models, I can't comment as I am not that hot on this model. The 3.0ltr diesel lumps have been known to blow the fuel systems due to the pressure etc and its costly to put right. A family friend who works at BMW sytner in Coventry informed me about this as I was looking at the possibility of a 530d.

    Hi John

    Sounds good.

Here is what you need to check for.

1/ Mileage, does it tally with the wear on the seat bolsters..are the pedal rubbers shiny and bald?

2/ Does it have full service history and receipts to back it up?
Main dealer FSH is better than small 'unheard of' garages but reciepts for work done are key..as this proves they are telling the truth.

    3/ Check panel gaps.
Do all the doors have an equal gap around the edges?
Does the bonnet have an equal gap at both sides with the front wings?

    Same for the rear panels.

4/Are there any chips or damage to the windscreens or glass?

5/ Running, the 330d engine is a quiet diesel. it should have oodles of torque and pull very hard and fast

6/ With the car stopped, put your hand through both front alloys and put your finger on the brake disks. if theres a lip of more than 2mm factor in new disks and pads

7/ Paint, look down the lines of the car and look for paint imperfections.
Look for overspray like this here

Check if the BMW service inspections 1 and 2 have been done as well.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

Good info by Boostist, having recently bought my car I would also add.

    1. Dont get taken in by the nice shiny car you go to see.....look at it from a financial view in terms of what needs done as much as anything else.

    2. Even if it has a FBMW history on it check it comprises of both inspection 1 and 2- a 6 year old car should have at least one inspection 2 completed. If a previous owner has opted to just get an oil change done or inspection 1 as a cheaper option the handbook will still be stamped and service indicator re-set, so check out exactly what has been done

They are good cars if well maintained.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your advice. Bought the car today for £6000, it was a second chance offer on E-Bay. A few things wrong with it but nothing too bad, due a service now, the last service last year was a No 2 inspection. Lots of receipts with the car, air mass sensor replaced along with some turbo valves or something like that.

The worse thing i found was that the front discs may need replacing soon as they were an advisory on the mot, which was done last week, and some rear bushes. But all in all a lovely car, do you think i had it cheap or was that the average price. Its an SE, leather and all the goodies fitted.

Thanks again and i'm sure i will be asking plenty of question in the future as i'm very new to BMWs.

Am i right in saying that i also have the E46 model ?

By the way, anyone looking for a cheap 97 E300 TD, 7 seater estate???
