go on auto trader type in cat c or d and compare to regular models. You'll get an idea of what you'll lose.
By offer do you mean from the insurance or did you mean the £1.5k-2k quote?

    I mean of the insurance.
Surely because it is my car i can say whether its a write off or not so it won't effect the future price..?

Hi mate - let me give u an example. My Dad had his Mercedes E240 (X plate) written off because someone shunted him at high speed. The insurance co offered him £4600 - and despite producing bills during ownership of £3000 + plenty of Merc history they wouldn't budge on price. However saying that they did have a engineer ring me and run through autotrader to ensure the price was valid. Also the accident happened in Sep last year and they are still processing the whiplash claim .... so this will take a while i.e. it will be a while till you get a payout on that.

As for Cat D (no chassis damage I think), Cat C (chassis damaged) is determined by the insurance company and registered on the DVLA database, so unfortunately you have no say in that. Somehow though you can find some cars on ebay that are salavged but have not had the crash recorded - perhaps thats a discussion to take up in another thread. Anyway cars with Cat C and Cat D are usually avoided like the plague by private buyers unless they are from the motor trade. Also the estimate from the garage is exactly that, there could be some more nasty surprises underneath meaning you could well spend your whole payout getting a car fixed which isn't worth that much anymore unless you keep it and run it into the ground. Finally cars that have been shunted often never feel the same again however this is really a matter of perception.

My advice would be take the money, possibly put a bit more in if you can afford it and buy another 535 sport. Seen a silver one on an X plate on Autotrader 50k miles here is the link:

    http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk...cleRegLetter=X

A bit on the expensive side though. An alternative this seems like a bargain 530 on 02 :

Good luck however you go about it.

Thats top advice re the feeling of the car after a rear shunt. Also creaks like mad afterwards. But you cannot tell someone it's not been written off if it has. Once it's gone the insurance route it's noted and unfortunately it will effect future value of the car, but then depends on how long you were planning to keep it.

One thing you can do re the insurance payout is find other similar models, same age, approx millage etc and present these to them to see if they'll give you that bit more. I know a few guys who have done this. Most advise don't accept their first offer

Ouch, is that the petrol tank bent underneath?
That will be the most costly :(

Least no one seriously injured, was he driving with his eyes shut?

He was talking to his girlfriend at the time, i was thinking if i hadn't of been there would he of hit the kids who were crossing the lights at the time? something to ponder on..

Thanks for the help but i think i will keep the car as the place i have had an estimate at i know quite well and if it costs less than 2k which they have assured me it will then il have a few quid in my pocket for something else.

Thats not the tank by the way its the boot floor the garage thinks it will be able to knock it back out and get it looking perfect but we will see.

On the driving part it just feels the same, i know after a shunt its never the same car but i really feel like i will be keeping this car for a while so was just thinking about the value for the future..

Might get of couple of things extra done in the garage while it is there..Any suggestions? Was thinking maybe a custom twin exit but we will see..

I will keep this updated with pics though thanks for all the replies

I would suggest getting all bushes replaced whilst its out of action. That way when you get it back it will feel unbelievably sorted whilst round the bends and hopefully help you forget the smash

welcome to the forums mate - hope all is well!

Sorry to hear about it - any excuse from the lad or just wreckless, careless driving?

EDIT: just looked at the pics on my phone... jesus it too the brunt of the force bloody well i'd say... i clipped a motor and tore most of my n/s off! lol

Make sure it's sorted by a BMW specialist!
