Hi guys I thought I would finally sign up to the forums as I am about to buy my first BMW. I have been using the forums for research and finding out what to look for but some of the threads are about 4-5 years old now.

Anyway I will introduce myself, I have owned 4 cars now. The first a Ford Fiesta 1991 which only had 10k on the clock (all legit) bought for £500 but cost £1200 to insure. Then I got a Fiat Punto 2006 reg. Thought the FIAT would break as they have a reputation for breaking all the time according to rumours. I then had a Toyota MR2 Turbo, great fun for the first 5 months then it was problem after problem (I will never ever buy an import car) I then purchased a non turbo variant and it has been one of the best cars I have owned (on roundabouts and corners that little thing can move!). I have spent £1000 on repair bills over 3 years including MOT's and Tax and 35mpg.

However now I require something with a bit more seats and slightly bigger engine for cruising with really. Not really fussed on diesel as I've found if you drive sensibly you do get a decent MPG return (only do 8k to work a year). I am looking at either 328ci or 330ci. I shall keep you guys updated with my search for one, hopefully I will get one by september.

Just wondering what common faults should I look for as I know these cars won't be brand new so I guess I just need to know what the biggest problems are before I get one so I can find out if that problem has been fixed. I have looked on the forums and for the 328 it seems to be a subframe issue right?

    Cheers guys

Welcome to the forum, some 330 suffer this although it rarer after 2001, these are nice cars not in your face fast more like very very good gt's, rust on the front arches. Rust anywhere really, check radiator for bowing, cooling system is the thing with theses, if you start it and a yellow oil light comes on this is a common fault around 60 to 80 quid to fix, make sure you get more than one key. They cost 130 and eBay won't cut it, boot floors, do a search there's plenty on em if looked after these will do hundreds of thousands of miles

    Hello and Welcome on board

another to mention which is common to all E46's is tramling and vague steering exasperated by Mtech suspension set up/ wide 18"dia wheels
and worn steering rubber bush components, RCAB's, RTABs and control arms. So look to possibly replacing these components
if the steering is off and/or being replaced in the cars service history or receipts

So basically I should make sure the suspension has been looked at before purchase? My car knowledge is quite basic but thanks mate.

Thanks rumpleforeskin I have been looking at other options and the only other car I can compare is the C Class Coupe's but they are so over priced. So what do you mean by radiator bowing? I will look for rust as my current car had a heap of it and I had no idea ended up costing me at least £400 to fix. Thanks all points noted, I take it there's no turbo to worry about right?

If the car suffers badly with tramlining and steering vagueness simply check the history and see if steering bush components have been changed as you'll have to budget for them being replaced, circa £700 for RCAB's, RTABs and control arms fitted and car 4 wheel aligned.

Forgot to mention tyre choice and tyre wear levels can also affect the tramlining affect so check the brand, condition and tread depth of the tyres, a bit anal I know but can save you money in the long run.

I think tyre brand choice is a good indication of how the owner considers the car, you wouldn't fit poor quality tyres on your pride and joy would you?
