Thought I'd quickly introduce myself before I go off to search around for technical information. Good opportunity to see what you're all like

Picked up a new (to me) E36 M3 last week to replace my previous track/weekend car - a 2002 MR2 Roadster I'd owned since 2003 that had, at one point, a turbo kit, injectors, standalone ECU, coilovers, chassis bracing, roll bar, and floating plate clutch and felt awfully dead and un-fun once I'd taken all that off!

Here she is - eagle eyed among you might spot the registration in another members signature .. you won't need two guesses to know where it came from, in that case

So after a few days of ownership the jobs I know need doing are:

Full alignment, probably take a trip to Wheels in Motion as they're not far away
The roof has a habit of not going down fully; it doesn't fold 'past' the lip inside the rear hatch so the hatch won't latch closed on top of it. Got to research that one
Could use a new rear window
It appears to have had a slight incontinence problem on my drive of what appears to be gearbox oil (stinks like it, anyway ) - I'll pop it over the pit at the weekend and see if it's something I want to hassle the warranty company for or just fix myself
I really need to fit a stereo, although listening to the engine (when the sunday drivers poke off out of the way) is fun
Slight oily smell when hot which I suspect is the cam cover gaskets, must investigate

So not a terribly long list, really, for a 14 year old car although it's already making me quite fancy the idea of an E46 SMG-II M3... but, must save the money for this, the project-project:

Prize for whoever guesses what the pile-o-parts is :

    Thanks guys

Found the leak today - unfortunately it's the input shaft seal on the diff - not a massive leak, but then the diff doesn't have a great oil capacity.. so when I get back from the US in a weeks time I'll have to phone up the warranty company, I think.

There also appears to be a leak between bell housing & engine, another one one of the SMG hydraulic lines and another on the low pressure PAS bottle to pump hose. So .. a few leaks to fix. And a whole lot of broken underbody plastics! Oh and the roof gets stuck every time now, so .. will have to investigate the internal ropes - after the oil leaks are fixed, anyway.
