    Hi All

Must admit i am a BMW virgin, seeking to buy a 5 series touring, fed up with rusty Mercs and heavy Jags, i am particularly drawn to a 5 series touring E39 i think (well i am a virgin) and would like some info on the diesel versions. Any particular faults to watch for and what power outputs they are and also what the real life fuel consumptions are like, i am really interested in the 525 or 530 and any info on the specs of the differing models would be a great help.

    Thanks
    Wolfman

well, i'm pondering at the moment, firstly i was going to replace our main car, the Mercedes with a late E39, probably a 2003, but the other half is very attached to the supercharged C class, so second thoughts were to replace my Jaguar, which is my little toy and was a replacement for a porsche 944 as baby seats don't fit in them very well. so in the interests of keeping the road tax to a reasonable level a pre 2001 would fit the bill (even considered the older model as this model i can insure on the cheap cherished car policy i have for the jag) budget will be whatever it takes, usually i go for a higher mileage car to reduce outlay, i am a service trechnician/supervisor and work on specialist vehicles and equipment so do all my own servicing and repairs, and believe that higher mileage does not neccessarily mean reduced reliability or increased running costs. What i was really curious about was any major changes to the engines as the technical figures on autotrader adds suggest early 525's (e39) are much worse on fuel consumption than 530's, so my question are; are the engines based on the original BMW diesel units? are they drect or indirect injection, common rail or not when were any major changes to the motors and how to tell. and what fuel consumption am i likely to get? or should i get a 528 instead?

    Thanks

The 525tds had the M51 engine, and older style diesel injection http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M51

The 530d had the M57 engine, and high pressure injection.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M57

Ronnie is right on the money.

While the 530i has better fuel consumption....the older 525 has MUCH cheaper parts for most items.

The high pressure injectors on the 530i for example are something ridiculous like £400 each (6 of)?? (not sure exactly but they are a LOT)
on the 525 you can probably get them for £70 each.

    So its swings and roundabouts

With fuel prices being the robbery price that they are in the yUK, diesels to my mind have lost a lot of the cost saving they originally had over petrols but I would personally go the 525i UNLESS the 530 comes with an extended warranty
