Hi guys, new to the forums. Currently a Hyundai Coupe owner but I'm looking to upgrade to a E46 Coupe
Been reading on the forums and I like what I see! There are so many nice cars on here! I would also like to get involved in some local meets/cruises. Anything regular that happens in the Cambridge or South West London area??

Just waiting for insurance to be nice to me before I can finally get one!. Anything I should be looking out for in an E46? Particular engines to look out for?

    Thanks guys!

    Naj

320 upwards will be fine go for 330 if u want best performance mpg between 320 a d 330 is minimal if u check but insurance may be the drawback,if its convertible it will be one insurance group higher than saloon or coupe im sure mines group 18 out of 20 so its up there but only £50 per month with 3 yrs ncb so dont let the groups scare you

Agree with gold, anything over 320i is the way to go

Yes! I read up on previous threads who said pretty much the same thing. I'm afraid the added cost of insurance and tax has put me off the 330i if I'm honest.
So there's not a lot on the market for around my budget. Some of that is due to me being the most pickiest man alive! Haha! Looking for a facelift E46 coupe 320. Whats the general take on prefacelift convertibles? Any common issues with the soft top?

the extra weight of the convertible will make the 320 feel slow.

when I was looking for a coupe I though 325ci was best its about 175bhp and gets about 30mpg combined which for a petrol is good 330ci will get you about 22mpg combined which with prices of fuel these days explains why they cheap if you can afford buy a 320cd should get an se for around 3 grand with about 120k but a sport will cost you over 4k for a decent 1

I had a E46 318ci first because i was worried about fuel cost but infact my 330 only cost £4 more per week to run on fuel ive done many brim to brim tests when filling up to work out accurate mpg for the same weekly miles i did in the 318 to the 330 you would be suprised how little there actually is in mpg between the engine variations

These are the figures for E46 manual coupe you will see from 320 to 330 theres is very little difference in mpg i always use the lowest urban mpg figure as combined is hard to replicate unless doing a full tank journey without stopping i cant understand why people even buy 325's because the mpg with a 330 is almost identical

These are the figures for the same engine variants 318 to 330 but with automatic geabox if you look a 325 auto actually gives out worse MPG figure than a 330 manual which is why i spent time looking at all this before buying a 330 manual more power more performance and still returns better mpg than 325 auto....no brainer really ?

If insurance is the reason for choosing a 325 over 330 theres only 1 insurance group difference so you wont be saving on fuel but insurance might be slightly lower

I think the groups are as follows if i remember correct

    318 ins group 14
    320 ins group 15
    325 ins group 16
    330 ins group 17

Convertibles will always be 1 group higher for each engine so my 330 vert is group 18. I used to pay £115 per month for my 318ci ins group 14 this went up to £135 per month for the 330 vert ins group 18 but last years renewal was only £51 per month for the 330 vert with only 3yrs No claims bonus

It only goes upto insurance group 20 so dont be put off before getting quotes on higher engine variants when running cost are not even that much more like i said £4 extra per week in fuel to run a 330 compared with my 318 full tank cost £72 would last approx 325 miles and last two weeks every other friday i would top up now it cost £40 per week so £80 over two weeks doing exactly the same weekly journeys for the last 3 yrs

i went from an e36 1.9 is coupe to a e46 325 ci sport and actually got slightly better fuel economy from the 325 so don t go for a smaller engine thinking you ll save fuel , i now run a 530i which is a bit heavier on fuel being an auto triptronic but the extra power and torque is worth it ,,,,,,
