I am currently 1 year off being able to have my test and want to start a project car now so that i can have a nice car for when i have passed my test.

So i am asking can anyone guide me to a good project car on a reasonable budget?

I am interested in getting a 2 door BMW with a small engine so that the insurance will be low.

Another way of putting it is, if you could go back to my age what car would you have wanted to built as a project ?

So any suggestions would be great...

    Mechaphile??? Just kidding mate

    Welcome to the forum

I would go for a compact for sure... All the syling products are available, got a nice hatch back for awesome sounding stereo system and the engines are 4 cylinder. My choice would be the 318ti 140bhp

    Welcome.

I would say to go for an E30 318i or 318is if your budget can make it.

Purely because I love E30s and they are cool cars

As mentioned the E30 or E36 models are the best options with pletny about to choose from. With any new driver, regardless of the engine size, the make of car will make a difference, so any BMW is likely to be on the pricey side to insure, even a 318i/is .......

The trick would be to go for something thats not too flash and not something you would associate a 'bad boy' image with to help reduce the cost of insurance.

    Whilst not BMWs, other suitable options to consider are;

    - VW Golf (range of engines from 1.4L > 2.8 VR6, both the 3dr and 5dr body styles and they are easy to work on and cheap to run and care for)

    - Honda Civic

    - Audi Coupe (i think they had the 1.8 models in these)
Let the fun times roll .....

BMW 328i Coupe - Boge M-Tech Shocks, Boge Turbo Lowering Spring Kit (30/20mm), ATE Power Discs
    Volvo C70 T5 GT
UK Spec Toyota Supra 3.0ltr Twin Turbo Automatic

Thanks to those above for letting me know what i should be looking at.

Ive been having a quick look at some E30's, E36's and saw a nice E20 whilst i was at it. Nonetheless the E30+36 are both very stylish cars that capture the true beauty of a BMW. Although the e30's are great looking cars i would prefer to get a E36 because of its slightly more modern look which is great, and some modded 36's look incredible.

Concerning beginner cars i would love to get a rover 100 because of its smallness and manoueverability and i have learned to drive in one quite a bit, although they are incredibly rusty and good ones are hard to come by.

The VW golf is a nice car but im not that interested.

Honda civics i think are good cars but second hand ones are often uncared for and dont look the best condition.

up to now i think ill try find a good BMW E36 but before i get one i will check what body kits there are and how many mods i can get.

BMW E36 = one of the most moddable vehicles on the planet... you can't go wrong.

When choosing a mod you've got to think long and hard about it... one bad move can take a greatly styled car into the CHAV bracket.... not good!!!

Thanks for the info im probs gonna get one then and go crazy with it.

Dont worry, i wont make a chav car.

And with help from me brother he said to get ricaro race seats because they look the best.

Also i am intending to put some original ICE in the car , im gonna think of something , dunno what yet , but im thinking something along the lines of , a few amps, some fusion reactor speakers, and maybe with some investment a console and monitor or something ridiculous like that, well basically lets just say i want to make it good enough to be a cover car, that would be ace.
