juyst joined, seeing as this looks like the biggest and most helpfull bmw forum.

currently driving a honda civic but looking for something more presentable.

i was happy with the civic as the insurance was okay with me, being that im 18. hondas are generally rediculously high insurance for young drivers. but tesco seemed to like me, i thought i would never insure any other car for a good few years, but a phonecall to tesco revealed i could insure a 316 saloon for nothing more than a couple quid more a year.

have set my mind on an e46 316i, im trying to do as much reading on them as i can, but getting confused on which is which and what has what,

i understand theres a facelift and pre facelift, i dont know which im looking at. and all the extras im not sure of either?

if anyone could be of any help?

Hello mate, welcome to the forum!

Right basic things to lookout for on the earlier models is the rear subframe failure, which if you have a search around the forum you will find a lot of info on.

Also cars around the 60-80000 mile mark, will be starting to wear through bushes and some wear & tear parts which can be costly to replace, so your probably better off going for higher mileage (pretty bulletproof engines anyway) or really low mileage.

Also a full service history is a must, and preferably full dealer service history.

The other 316 e46 owners should be along shortly to help. Those are common issues to the e46 but 4-cylinder's will have different things to be aware of than the 6's.

But again, Welcome to the forum, hope to see you in a nice BMW soon!

    Ahmet
