    Hi all...

I'm currently looking to buy a BMW E46 330 CI M Sport, but it has got to be an automatic. Slightly concerned over what i have read about the auto gearbox though! For my budget the mileage is looking to be around 80k upwards.

What should i be looking out for, whats the max mileage you would look at, and is the auto really that bad?! I thought BMW's were pretty much bullet proof until starting to look about. But is it people just quick enough to point out the bad points and not the good?

Ive seen a lovely one but the mileage is nearing 100k, but it has a full BMW service history.

    Thanks for reading

There are a few issues with BMW gearboxs but the main one seems to be BMW policy of saying they are sealed for life.

The general view here is to change the oil, sump and filter (filter is build in to the sump) at roughly 100k miles. It costs about £250 for the kit and is a bit of a palaver as the oil needs to be warmed up but should ensure a longer life. The pressure sensors can fail but again easy to replace.

With all E46's you need to test drive it, they are famous for tramlining which is often just nasty tyres but can be the front wishbones and bushes, there are some good after market parts on the market for this and so again not too expensive. Also check the handbrake works, they have a habit of rusting up and it is an annoying job to fix

    Thanks for the reply..

I have read about the oil change etc, £250 doesn't seem too bad compared to needing a new transmission i guess!!!

    Welcome to the forum
The problem with forums are you get a false view of the faults. For every person who has a problem there are probably 100's who don't but you don't read about them.

be very careful these are potential money pits. What you want is a car that looks well, drives nicely and has had lots of money spent on it. I stress this if the previous owner hasn't had work done you will be paying for it especially around that mileage.

    Welcome

You have to remember people don't usually come on forums and say "I have a 330 auto with no problems"

People come on forums because they have a problem, there are 10h00's of people who haven't been on a forum because they don't have any problems

So don't let stuff you read on a forum put you off

Hi Looby, I have a 330d E46 Auto which I bought a year ago on 86400 miles and now on 100430, it's been brilliant. No gearbox issues and it's a lovely easy drive. Hope you find the one you want and it serves you well
