    Hi all

As the title suggestes im thinking of buying a BMW.
Not sure which to go for, i only drive 7 miles to work so fuel economy isnt a huge issue but dont want something silly.
20mpg is ok by me but used to have a Mercedes SL500 that on a run would do 25mpg but to work and back was more like 5mpg. i guess thats mainly due to the car being cold for most of the journey
I was thinking about a 540 or maybe a 740 but what mpg am i to expect to get?
Im only looking to spend a couple of grand on the car so wont be low mileage or newer than say 12 years old.
I have a "toy" for weekend driving so dont want a cheap and chearful, cheap to run car for work and as i say 20mpg is ok.
Any useful advise on the sudject would be greatly appreciated

a 540 or a 740 will give sub 20mpg on that trip sorry to say as they take a while to warm up also they can be expensive to fix so approach with extreme caution. I would look at an e39 530i e46 330i or e36 328i will do 25+mpg and can be had for that kind of dosh also less likely to land you with eye watering bills though you still want one with plenty of history.

Don't go diesel at that price and mileage. the petrols will suit you better also 528 is ok but a 530 is a lot better as the 2.8 is abit stretched by the weight of the e39. I assumed from your talk of 540's etc that you wanted some poke.
