    Thanks for all the replies.
Indeed I have been a BM nut since I was a kid back in the 80's when E30 m3's were winning everything. A friend’s dad had a 325i Convertible, and I knew that this type of car was going to stick with me for years.

I wish I had the ££ for an E30 M3 now, but unfortunately there are other things & hobbies to fund. Home cinema being one of them... (I'm a regular on AVforums ).
I was in Munich Legends a few weeks back and they had a beautiful white E30 M3 that was as near as 'new' as you can get. But the £25k plus to drive it away was a bit much for a toy.

Unfortunately, despite the knowledge I have of cars and their workings I seem to have bought a nightmare M3. I searched the country far and wide to get a good one and I thought I'd cracked it!! But there is just no telling sometimes.

Hopefully I will get the chance to drive it sometime soon even though I have owned it for a week now!

I had a few issues with the car immediately following collection... one being the cooling which luckily turned out to be a thermostat problem and not a cracked head as was first thought (following a new pump).
Also when I test drove the car the Vanos was silent... two weeks later and following the collection, it sounds like a box of bolts!!
Unfortunately it was sold as seen!! Next time I will have a test drive on the day of collection too... live and learn
