Literally just got back from picking up a 325ti from North London (actually just cooked a steak and washing down with a bottle of Shiraz whilst I reflect on my purchase). I was after a ‘hot hatch’ for practicality but also really wanted rear wheel drive, was getting bored of FrontWD, 2 years or so ago I realised the answer was a BMW compact, but for whatever reasons I’ve only now just got one.
First impression driving out of London was that it wasn’t really that quick, the throttle response was a bit slow, but the further I got I found it needed a few more revs to get it moving a bit quicker. Nearing the motorway I was able to exercise my foot a little more and found it needed heavy boot and revs, but oddly between say 25% throttle and full throttle didn’t really improve the response much. Having said all that I have been using a 911 all week and I suppose most cars will feel a bit sluggish after that. Once on my private ring road a proper smile started appearing, I surprisingly found that following some others there was an indicated 110, not even trying and surprised at that speed, it’s been a long time since I’d seen others doing that, then I found dropping into third and taking to the red zone showed that it really is quite a sweet little motor. Once I got nearer home, on the twisties I exploited the revs and gears a bit more, needing only 2nd and 3rd gear it really started putting on the grin factor, I need some more time but I think it’s going to be one of the vehicles that you can thrash the t1ts off and won’t get into too much trouble.
Other things are that it sounded nice with the boot in but may need a little more volume to really appreciate it. I’ll have to look into improving that without loosing the quiet at cruising speeds (getting old!), any suggestions welcome. I’ve been looking at the vendors section and there’s a few people doing remaps/chips and some cold inductions so may go down that route to improve response etc but I’m a bit wary of some of the claims. (I’ve been racing bikes for 10 years or so, so I know there’s plenty of BS out there regarding tuning/power/dyno figures/gains etc before anyone starts, sorry if that offends, it’s just life!)
I ‘think’ I picked it up for a fair price given it needs a few things doing but maybe for now I’ll leave that for another time.
