Just picked up myself a bit of a bargain (IMO) for £500, nice little 318ti compact with 9 months MOT

Couple of small issues to sort, it needs a service, the passenger window keep going up at an odd angle, so will have to have a look at that, small bit of upholstry on the passenger A pillar needs re-glueing. And I think I need to renew some of the suspension bushes because I have a little bit of play in the steering (very small) and a bit of a judder when turning at speed (70-80mph ish) I think this is probably control arm bushes? I also need to flush the heating system as the heater isn't too warm, should be easy enough as I don't have climate control

I've previously only owned Jap and French cars, and while this isn't the fastest I've owned it's certainly the most refined driving experience!

P.s. Can anyone tell from this if I have the M42 or M44 engine? Thanks

Hi and welcome along to Bimmerforums UK, it's good to have you on board.

I'd say that is a M42 engine without a doubt.

Easy way for you to tell, look on the VIN plate at the engine number.

    184S1 is M42. 1.8 litre.

    194S1 is M44. 1.9 litre.

Also you have old school "barn door" air flow meter, M44 has a hot wire modern type.
