    Hi guys!

I still currently have a W202 C230K manual, after having it for a few years i think its time to move onto my next cruiser, which i wanted to be a V8!

So i've been looking through the market for an E39 540 and i'm quite intrigued and seriously considering to defect, the mercedes equivalent (E430) just doesn't cut it for me, looks ugly and its not as sporty as the 5 series.

Technically i aint a BMW owner yet, but i'm very sure i'm going to buy one... just waiting for the right specimen to come along and i'll get it!

I've read http://www.windigoauto.com/E39CommonProblems.html about common faults, but is that everything? and in general do these cars have quite alot of faults or are they ok to bare with?
Also are there any noteable mileages which major services get carried out (that i'd like to avoid?), if so, please let me know!

Hello and welcome Adam . You will make a wise choice if you do opt for the e39 instead of the W210. With that common problem list, I bet you there is a Mercedes equivalent as well, I mean, what car doesn't have it's issues?

W210's have serious rust issues. and they're ugly. The only thing putting me off the 540 is that its a 1800kg car, my current car weighs 1500 and i think thats sometimes a bit heavy...

Is there anyone here who has a 540 that can give me some insight into its feel and performance? i'd be grateful for that.

    Adam

Welcome to the forum mate, I had a mercedes e class before i purchased my BMW and I can honestly say that if you wanted a car for long journeys and motorway travelling then stick to a mercedes. But if you want a car that puts a smile on your face everytime you "drive carefully" then BMW is the way to go.

My car at the moment is really fun... its got a few mods to it, and its faster and better handler than your average c230k ... but i'm bored of 4 cyl / 6 cyl engines and i want to try a V8...
