    Hey,

I am in the process of changing my car for a BMW E46 330ci. Not sure if this has already been mentioned elsewhere but couldn't find it; how can you tell the difference between a real facelift model and a fake without checking the VIN numbers? For example, there are some cars on autotrader that are post 2002 (which is when I understand the facelift was brought into production) but they have the old bumpers. Likewise, there are cars pre-2002 that have the facelift bumpers.

    Please help!

    Many thanks,

oh and I'm Hugh by the way!

Hello and welcome Hugh . If you are looking for a coupe, then it had a facelift in 2004, not 2002 which was the saloon model facelift. Back to the coupe facelift, you will have new bumpers, wings, side markers, headlights and LED tail lights.

    HI Hugh

    As Neal says!
Coupe facelift was 2004. If you find a 2002 'facelift' coupe it is fake.

    and welcome to Bimmerforums

Is that a trick question Hugh?...
Saloon = 4 door, Coupe/Convertible = 2 door when it comes to BMWs

haha sorry, no just wasn't sure of the definitions of saloon and coupé as they seem to differ slightly depending on the make of car.

So does this mean when I am looking on autotrader, any 330 coupé before 2004 which has the newer bumpers has been modified after-market? Some say they have M-sport pack, did this include these bumpers before 2004? For example, this:

has the new bumpers but its 2001. There seems to be quite a few about like this, does that mean they have all been modified after 2004?

    Many thanks for your time,

    Hugh

thats a pre face lift sport, the post facelift sports were still 2004. the wings are the easiest give away if you're looking from that angle. on the pre's they are down low and oblong shaped and on the post's they are up higher, triangular shaped in the crease of the wing. look on the wing of this one and you'll see what i mean facelift

Deano's right, you have posted a picture of a pre-facelift coupe. Now this is what it should look like from the front on a face lift...Clicky.

right! gotcha, i can clearly see the difference now. what confused me was the 2002 date which i accidentally miss-read for applying to the coupé which of course it doesn't.

So if i have got it right, what I actually wanna buy is the pre-2004 sport version which is similar looking to the post-2004 facelift as this is the only one I can afford!

thanks a lot for your time guys much appreciated, i'll post a pic of her when I get my mits on one if anyone is selling one you know who to contact...

    cheers
