The quote from the dealer is for the Breather unit which consists of the whole plastic housing and the foam type filter (oil separator),
the ebay listing is for the foam type filter (oil separator) + gaskets & o-ring only.

Click on blue text and you'll see the price for the oil separator is actually cheaper at dealers Oil Separator from dealers

Item #15 is Oil Separator (only), item #11 is Oil Breather unit including oil separator http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...16&hg=11&fg=15

Would he not be better getting the new vortex type filter as opposed to the foam one that clogs up and ruins the turbo..I changed the one on my 320 for the vortex type, was just under £50 for the complete unit .. I presume the 330 is the same but do stand corrected if it is'nt.

Up to a couple of weeks I'd have said yes Alan but seems BMW are now fitting the foam loo roll type oil separator and not the vortex design
The foam ones are ok if they are changed regularly, afaik every 2nd oil change, and the foam one is correct for the OPs vehicle.

See this post by shaft69 who iirc works for BMW(?)taken from this thread in the 5 series section of forums 2005 E60 530d - Oil seperator / Breather

that seems strange them reverting back to the foam filter,, makes you wonder what to do now as iv'e just changed to the vortex...the only thing I can think of is the vortex type doesen't have any filtering properties as it's only a seperator to convert the fumes back to a liquid to drain back to the sump ???? but saying that there shouldnt be any foreign bodies in the fumes and the oil has already been through the main oil filter anyway ??? any thoughts ??
