    Hi all,

I'm currently looking at a 1997 E36 323i Coupe Auto, the car has high miles (150 + K) but full service history and folder full of receipts etc.

The seller has said that the ABS light has just come on, and a garage has informed him that it's just a sensor that needs to be replaced. As this would be my first BMW I'm a little concerned about this, can anyone advise if this is likely to be the case and what else to look for when checking out the car.

I'll probably be back with more questions shortly.

    Regards

    Rob

Hey, I got an e36 316i about 2 months back. The abs light came on about a week later, and still hasn't been seen to.

In my experience, along with combined experiences from mates with ABS lights coming on... It doesn't mean the brakes are failing.

You can get standard brakes for BMW's without the sensors on them at all, which means the light would be on forever. So really, it's fine!

    Welcome to the site

It could be worth having a browse through the E36 section for any issues to look for, you could also have a read through the link below, it's mainly for the E36 M3 but a lot of the things to look out for apply to all E36 models

Cheers for the responses, was hoping it's something simple like a brake pad wear indicator wire being snapped. I'll make sure to test the brakes properly and get it looked at when time allows properly.

Rob - the ABS light may have come on due to the increased wet roads recently. Mine was fine up till a week or so ago when i went through a puddle. Now everytime i go through a puddle the ABS light comes on. I just pull over and turn engine off, turn it back on and all is fine!

is it the abs light or the brake pad warning light? they do differant jobs. if it is the pad light take off the wheels and check the pads for wear.if it is the abs light you can unplug the sensors one at a time stick the probes from a multimeter in the plug at the end of the sensor, set the meter to ohms and spin the wheels.all sensors should have a similar reading. if one is way out this will be the sensor to change. if all are ok the problem will be with the unit itself and could be costly.you brakes will not fail, the abs will just stop working. hope this helps

Kenny, that sounds like a plan. The seller has stated ABS light but I will check it out when I go to veiw the car.

One last question for you all, as this is a coupe can any advise if there are any issue with child seats fitting in the rear? I've got two little ones, but due to not having a car at the minute getting the car seats over to the seller for test fitting will be a nightmare so any advice welcomed.
