Hi guys! Just thought I'd introduce myself....
I joined this site a few months ago but have only just got round to working out how it all works and tearing myself away from mkivs.net (Golf owners site)!
What made me buy a BMW? Well 2 years ago I swore I'd never drive anything other than a VW. I'd traded in my Pug 306 and bought my MK4 Golf from VW two weeks after passing my test, it was my baby. It was on an 03 plate and only had 23k on the clock, however towards the end things turned very sour. I had to threaten VW and Lookers with legal action after the paintwork started going downhill very fast and they kept messing it up even more each time they tried to fix it under warranty.
For the first few months of this year I hardly saw the car as it was always in VW's bodyshop.... When I finally got it back it wasnt my baby any more and I knew it was time for a change.
My nanna has the new shape 5 series and has had a number of new BMW's over the last few years without any problems so I thought I'd give them a try.
I originally wanted a 3 series compact, but wasnt majorly fussed if I ended up with a 4 door.
After viewing a few, mainly compacts and CI's I found a real gem.
A black 03 plate 316i SE facelift saloon. One owner from new, full BMW service history, 55k on the clock and most importantly in stunning condition! Not a scratch, dent or stone chip in sight
I'm really fussy when it comes to how smart the bodywork is so I was really pleased to find one in this condition. Even the edges of the doors where people usually open them onto walls and things are perfect
So pretty much 2 years to the day of owning the Golf I part exchanged it and drove away in my E46.
I've not done too much to it yet.... So far I've spent about £600 on detailing and returning it to 'as new'. Its had an extensive detailing and machine polish to remove all swirl marks and bring out the true depth of the black paint. I've had the alloys refurbished by a local alloy wheel specialist to return them to 'as new' and fitted some new genuine carpet mats once the interior was detailed. I've even bought an air blower for drying the car after washing to minimise any risk of inflicting new swirls to the now flawless paint!
Future plans include tinting the front windows to the legal limit and having the rears blacked out completely (I think this looks ace on black cars).
I also intend to change the headunit and replace all the speakers to Rainbow ones as I really miss the quality of the sound system I had installed in my Golf.
So far I'm really enjoying BMW ownership. Had a slight hiccup that resulted in the car needing a new crankshaft sensor but BMW said this was a common thing and nothing to worry about.
Anyway... I'll stop waffling on and no doubt will be pestering you all for help and advice in the near future
Will post some pics up of my car soon, just need to get round to taking some!
