not really clued up on the 4cyl engines.

Gearboxes are usually very robust and trouble free.

Suspension components (bushes, mounts, links, joints etc) have short service lives but can go undetected for many miles. Check for wandering, rattles/clonks and softness from the suspension over bumps and rought surfaces.

Interiors are very hard wearing, so this should be be very presentable at the least. Early cars suffered with loose interior fixings, so just ensure all the interior plastics are present and well secured.

Rusta round the rear arches and boot area is something watch for. Older cars are likely to suffer from worn thermostats and possible cooling/heating issues.

great choice of cars . remember u will need time to get used to a rear wheel driven car .welcome to the world of the ultimate driving machine

o I woud advise to go for six cylinder or atleast a 318iS . .
oh and pls dont buy automatic BMW unless u really need it. as the real driving pleasure can only come from a manual

    hey big norm

    firstly welcom to the forum.

i have had an e36 coupe for five years now, only had to do the regula servicing/tyres/bulbs etc.

very robust and sturdy, the only tihng i have now noticed is a little rust on the rear arch (project when the weather sorts its self out)

my dad is selling his 318is coupe (1998 S) if your interested ill send you the details and pics!

thanks for all the replys, i am looking at the 316 purely because of insurance, when it comes to insure it in november i will 21, 2 years experience and hopefully 1 year ncb, i had a small claim a while back but i was going less than 5 mile an hour, so i dont know what will happen with that yet. is there any good sites that i could get a rough quote on that will let me put it through as november start date? thanks

Try Tesco, thats who I'm with. They don't mind younger drivers with the 316 - 328 beemas it seems (i'm 21)

Also just give Confused a go, see who comes out on top.
