Hello and welcome to the forum, good to have you with us.

Hope you manage to find the information to fix your mates 5 series, however, until you have been a member for more than three months and have a minimum of 100 technical posts you will not be able to trade on this forum, sorry

This is because in the past members have been scammed by "strangers" to the forum, these measures were put in place to ensure that any selling is done by people well known on the forum - I hope that you understand

the fuel mileage thingy goes up and down as you accelerate and brake etc
its actually quite amusing but you really cant trust anything electric in the car no more
i use to drive it very often and it was 100% fine and all of a sudden it went spastic shall we say lol
some one said something about a ecu of some sort but we havnt got a clue

i think il be here longer then 3 months lol

    Hi all,

Just taken delivery of a '56 plate 520d SE Touring that I'm chuffed to bits with!

Great low mileage and good price but quite a basic model.

Was wondering, can you get software upgrades to activate some of the things that are inactive e.g. voice control, stopwatch etc. on iDrive?

Would love navigation also but that's much more work I understand - will just download Tomtom for the iPhone!!! Tee hee!

    Any help gratefully received...

I would leave that to the Moderators to tell him unless you want to be absent again

Hi and welcome to the forums, from what you have described about your friends car it could be the electronic fuel level sender. Due to the motion in the fuel tank of accelerating and braking it could give a unreliable reading aswell as moving up and down dramatically, tthe sender unit could be cleaned up by using an ametech fuel sludge remover mixed in with the fuel over a few full tanks. Or it could be a complete new unit, I dont think they are expensive but I believe it is under the rear passenger seats?

    Hope this helps
