Basically Mark welcome to the forum and what years your motor.

Dont get yourself into a panic regarding the Nikisil btw .... its a known fault but can be overhyped and put stress on the car owner. Mines got Nikisil block but its fine, if you treat it right, let is warm up before booting it and keep an eye on things.

Nikisil blocks were affected by the sulphur in the fuel in the eary 90's and basically ate away at teh Nikisil lining on the cylinder bores causing MAJOR issues in which BMW replaced around about 100,000 engines due to it, but invariably some slipped through and are in the field so to speak.

However there are cars with 150K plus miles on them, and if they're looked after and serviced then they should be fine, as all the fuel if fine now in the Uk for them.

For arguments sake though, Nikisil is actually "harder" than Alusil
