    Hi Robsinc, Welcome to BFUK...........
This is what I say to anybody wanting and E39d

These cars can cost buckets of you hard earned honest
I would only buy something with a good history, you know, loads of receipts that match the car.
Certainly would not touch something that has anything wrong before you get it.
Get a good warrantee from a reputable garage; take somebody who knows 39's if you can.
You are obviously not sure as you have posted here so there you go...don't rush in.
Go get one with a good pedigree or don't bother at all.
unless you’re buying it for spares.

Major points are Swirl flaps on automatics only, over 70K can be engine destroyers look for de-flapping evidence or a new inlet manifold.
Any auto box issues, run away like Usain Bolt
Any shaking steering especially under light braking from speed 70 ish torsion arm thrust bushes.

Any tyre wear inside or outside edge front or back, good ones don't do this at all.
So new tyres could cover up this fault check for new cheepies.

Radio any audio standard equipment is often messed with, check everything is present and works, especially if it has fancy sat nav, high OBC and associated radio that gives messages, check pixels on all the displays. Is the boot cd changer fitted and working?

Check out the fan works OK and does not have a mind of its own this may require a decent drive 30miles should be a minimum.

Check the rear doors and carpet in the rear foot well for water leaks...

Check the temp is steady at 12 o'clock and gets there 5-6 miles from stone cold or sooner.

You can hear if the engine turbo etc is noisey, same as you can check the trim bodywork so won't delve into that... Usain Bolt2

If it won't rev above 3500 could have fuel pump issues

Bet you don't want one now.........

Live in orkney so its a problem finding then looking at one so going to surrey to look at one on tuesday but have another 3 lined up, just in case. Noticed that the 530i sport is a lot cheaper, how does it rate compared to the diesel?
