Hi all, Picked myself up a 2004 e46 330d manual yesterday from a small car dealer ship , very happy an it certainly flys along Just spent the last few hours giving it a gd clean.. i need to get the wheels re-furbed & change what i think is a worn rear diff bush but other than that it seems all gd so far.. ive been searching through the forum looking at faults/things to change on these... Couldnt find out any were for sure if my car would have these swirl flaps on a 2004 or not ? is it only the auto's with these ? or will mine have them ? One other think has anyone ever had a problem with the fuel computer ? most of the settings seem to work ok but the mpg reading doesnt move? Thanks in advance Ross...

Thats a pain lol , is there an easy way of checking to see if they have been replaced by a previous owner ? As the car came from a dealer and theres nothing about it in the service book etc..

    Hello and welcome to Bimmerfoums.co.uk

Have you tried resetting the OBC MPG as the current shown value could be thousands of miles worth of MPG calculations?
Cycle through the OBC using button on left hand stalk, when you get to MPG keep button pressed and it should reset to ---- then it will calculate and update.

Theres a Swirl Flap removal guide right here on BFuk ..http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...cement-t15571/
after you've viewed the write up see post #57 for pics and info on blanking the housings with a M5 screw.

To check if the manifold has been deflapped or not you can use a torch and look down the left hand side of the EGR valve
and underneath the manifold, see if the swirl flap actuator arm has been removed or the aluminium blank body fitted.

You can just see the aluminium blank bolted to the manifold circled in red, the pipe connecting to the left hand side of the EGR valve is underneath it.

Pushing the left button on the instrument cluster screen should reset your trip computer. On the computer, the button on the stalk, push it until its displaying your MPG, then push and hold it and the average MPG will be reset for fresh calculations.

Swirl flaps - if your car still has them fitted, get them removed and blanked as soon as possible. The job itself isn't hard, so its no real biggy to do - can either do it yourself via some photo guides on these forums, or you can get a garage to do it. Just don't put it off, as its damn important - and once done you can enjoy your car properly

The EGR valve is the big silver pipe that connects to the throat of the intake manifold. It has the big hose from the charge air/turbo at the front, and the EGR feed on the left hand side of it. If you remove the main engine plastic cover, its literally on your front right. The copper coloured pipe connects to its left.

Thats the mpg reset sorted ;-) didnt realise you had to hold down the stalk to reset ..cheers ....

Had a nose under the bonnet this morning after taking the engine cover off , looking on the passanger side half of the engine im pretty sure i can see what looks like a steel rod by the inlet manifold so im guessing i still have the original flaps in place ;-(.... Not sure if im going to tackle replacing these as im fairly hopeless with a spanner lol... were is the best place to get the replacement blanks ? http://www.pmwltd.co.uk/ ? ?

Good choice on the car mate!

Mine is a 53 plate manual 330d and HAD swirl flaps - but a local BMW specialist (read: ex BMW staff) removed them and fitted blanks for £155 parts and labour. That was Auto technic in Lutterworth, but don't know where abouts you are, you'll want to find a local.

One thing to bare in mind is that blanking plates cost about £6-9 each. One garage wanted to charge me £27 each for "official BMW parts" - now I don't think BMW make any official parts to cure problems that they refuse to aknowledge existance of! lol. - and when you mutliply that by 6 you've got a lot of "profit" going to the garage.

What kind of milage has she done? Cause one of my front shocks pretty much died at about 90k - well worth getting the suspension looked at / checked out if you're getting to those kind of miles - shock looked perfect until we took it off and it fell apart! lol.

    Apart from that, enjoy!

Oh, and most importantly of all - take some photos and show us your new ride!!

PMW's billet alloy blanks will do just fine (they're what I fitted), although you can find similar on eBay for half the price. Either or tbh PMW are a good company, if you phone an order in they'll double check your car details to make sure you get sent the right size etc. Helpful chaps

Trust us all when we say you want them done sooner rather than later, and that you shouldn't grudge the cost of getting the flaps replaced with blanks.
