hey all thought id register to get some info as im after my first BMW im usually a jap guy have many of the performance cars over my time, anyway im looking at an E36 328i/325i coupe. just wondering if there is anthing i should avoid when looking, i no about the rust areas, but have been told to stay away from vanos engines (no idea what it is) and is there any particular engine that is less regarded as a good engine in the E36,

anyway hoping to get something in the next two weeks, and start being an active member on the forums,

316i is regarded as a not so good engine; heavy car, not enough power in a 316i!

I'm happy with the insurance costs, so I just deal with it... for now!

Welcome to the forum, and welcome to BMW if you go ahead!

cheers guys thats what i was thinking as they are a quite heavy car to start with. anything below a 323 would be underpowered , insurance is no bother , M3 would only cost £900 fully comp but i dont have M3 money lol.

my brother has a pre vanos (vanos is a variable valve timing technology - it adjusts the valve timing by moving the camshafts) 325i and although the torque isnt available as low down as the vanos 325i it's such a lovely engine and sounds awesome- he is very happy with it anyway. The 328i has great tuning potential- the m50 manifold conversion is very popular and will yeild much more power. for a full list of specs for the e36 have a look here: http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...ations-t35439/ welcome mate

having a crisis of heart guys lol , im not sure what to go for , e36 then i can have a 2.5/2.8 or a e46 but funds wont provide anything over a 323 and even then were touching 100+ thou on the clock,

how do the 2 differnt models compare for say long driving/comfort is the e36 more rickety and the 46 more sturdy . im torn between the two power or comfort also are e46 prone to rust like the 36 is thanks,

If you're finding it hard to come up with the goods when looking at E46's, why not have a look at the E39's? You will be able to get more for your money with the 5 series and the level of comfort will be far superior to the E46, though this is no slouch when it comes to levels of refinement. In answer to the question of rust, i have yet to see an E46with rust.

welcome to the forum i went from a 200sx (i assume thats what you have to a 328) i found the 328 much duller on performace and handling ,but much better built, more reliable, easier to live with, i personnelly think a slower but much better car, if you want an e36 go for a 328, the vanos issue affects the 3.2 m3 evo only, if you want an e46 get the 330 you'll run them easy after a 200, if your ok money wise get the m3 evo, look around 5 grand will get you a evo with history that is standard, running costs will be high but after a 200 affordable and get the vanos checked out its exaggerated, if it was as bad as reported no one would buy one, yes expensive when they go but these engine are good for 160000 hard miles, avoid smg, to some up 328 e36/330e46 m3 evo if you can afford, p.s m3 3.0 is fast and is easier on the pocket than an evo, no vanos issue or superdear brakes either, good luck and let us know what you decide

I beleive people are a bit misled when it comes to the running an M3.

Its not bad at all.....HONESTLY.....i have one.

    £590 fully comp
    £215? a year tax
28/29 miles per gallon on average
Tyres only expensive to replace if you drive like a tw@t

^^^^^ is no more expensive to run than my Civic Type-R

Get an M3 Evo my friend......its worth it.

    Welcome
