Hello eveybody. Well as the title says Im thinking of getting myself a new motor, well new to me but I only have about £1500 to play with. Im not exactly sure what model to go for but I like the look of the 3 series. But I suppose it all depends which model is the best value and meets my other needs. I have always liked the look of these cars but I know nothing about them, running costs, ease of sourcing S/H parts, how easy/hard are they to work on by yourself, what to look out for when buying, stuff like that. I would really appreciate some advice and recommendations on what would be the best model to go for. Every car I have bought the 1st thing I do is get the timing belt done as a precaution so how easy/hard is it to replace the timing belt, water pump on these and how much is a rough estimate for the work. Thanks

    Kev

Just had a quick look around. Probably be a E46 I would be looking for

    Hi Mate
Well most 3 series dont have cam belts, so no worries there and water pumps are a know fault but easy to replace, the suspension on these cars is imo very basic, so if your good with a set od spanners its no big deal, parts for most cars are pretty cheap and watch out for early e46's with larger engines as they rip the boot floor where the sub frame mounts, so do check, other than that they are good car imo.

or just an E36 if you don't like the compact. they have a timing chain so you dont really need to worry about that side of things. if your used to working on cars the W/pump isnt too hard as the principle is that same as other cars. i think there just a pain to get out if there corroded but nothing a few persuasive big hammer knocks wont sort out

Thanks lads. Do all 3 series have a timing chain then? My previous car was written off a month ago by some *** not paying attention. Just waiting on my insurance paying out then I will be on the look out for a new motor.

    Any more advice greatly appreciated.

Well. Im a member of another forum that has a very active Motor section. I have been asking what car would be suitable for me with a budget of £2k and would be reliable and not cost a fortune to keep on the road. As soon as I mentioned the 3 series I was shot down in flames. Why do so many people have a problem with these cars are they really that much of a hassle to keep on the road?

Is the E46 3 series available in a 1.6/1.8i engine?
