Hello everyone, thanks for letting me join what looks like a great forum.

As yet I do not own a BMW (lol dont throw me out) but I am looking for a bigger engined 3 series (325, 328, 330 ect) as a second car, for a project that will eventually turn into a fast road / possible track day car.

I have come here for advice and guidance for buying the car and then I hope to annoy the hell out of everyone when I begin working on it (at present very little experience working on cars, but some on tractors )

    Cheers

    Andy

    Thanks for the welcome

This forum is huge !!!! Just started looking for some basic buying guide and basic tuning options, I think i'll be spending the next week on here solidly.

I should really give some details of what im looking to do !

I have been left a small amount of money to 'enjoy' ( her exact words in the will) and thought 'that means a fun car' my basic requirements were RWD, well built, decent amount of power and not to rare so parts are avaliable. 3 seconds after deciding a car is what I needed a 3 series (E36 most lilkley on my budget) was indeed the answers and a nice stright six engine would forfill the fun part fully.

I am looking for a mechanicaly sound but tatty car that needs some TLC, i am treating this as a long term project, on the road within 6 months, driven in anger on a track with 2 years. This is a complete learning experience for me, always been a bit scared to work on my current car (toyota yaris) as Ive dreaded the thought of it being in bits on a sunday night and its need 7am monday morning!!! Its also been so reliable everyhting has been done during servicing.

I hear to learn and benefit from your expereince

    Cheers

Well E36 would be a good way to go for track car... But depends on the budget you have as you what you can get!!! Anything from 325+ would be good for creating a track car from.

This is definitely a good forum to be on with regards to help/tips etc.

My budget is the really bad part, I have about £1000-£1200 (max) to spend on the car, I see this as a long term project and plan on spending a further £2000 on the car over the course of a few years (im too impatient to save up)

Tatty 325/328 are well within budget. Usual warnings about trying to avoid Nikasil motors would be in play though. Especially so if you are going to be thrashing it around tracks. Last thing you need is to be forced into buying a replacement motor. There again, maybe that extra push would lead to an M3 powerplant making its way in there earlier rather than later.

Thanks for the advice, what are Mikasil motors (sorry im a n00b) also the chances are when I get her, Im going to strip it anyway and give it a full going over to get to know the engine. Also my mum works at a metal treatment place so I could get any parts i needed to peined and cleaned up, including any panels that might need attention

Do a search around the forum for info on the 'Nikasil' issue. Once worn, Nikasil are bolloxed. All sorts of info on them in the forum, from the fuel available at the time they hit uk shores and the destruction that same fuel brought upon the liner. just find out how to identify a nikasil motor then avoid them like the plague.
