Hello My Name is James — I have owned a E30 for 2 years which is now sold, but looking to stay in the family

Me and my lady want a new car,
(well more her than me as I have a motorbike)

We will only use the car for weekends or just for and if we need it... As I pushbike or walk to work and she does the same or uses her work's van.

So MPG isn't a issue, really. I want something BMW again as with the E30 it was solid and as I look after it reliable.

    I am looking at a E36 328i such as this, http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1815402.htm

Or E46 such as this, http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1821503.htm

    1. Is there a significant service / overall cost involded in a E46 over the E36? I understand the E36 328i is common? so are parts more ready available from specialist etc over say E46 parts?

    2. What are the rough service and costs on the 328 engines? more than a 323/325 ? or is it all around the same.

    3. And are there major common problems in either? Rear bushes on E46 and Nikosil on the E36?? is that correct?

    Regards

    James

well for starters welcome, the e36 your looking at you should be after paying around 2k!, M3 e36s are around 3.5k. and you can get a convertable for 3k or under!, but the m tech 328 is a cracking buy!, m3 kit, good power!
E46's, you want to look for a post march 2000 car to steer clear of the subframe issue!, and if fuel isn't a problem then its a 325/330 you should be looking at. the main things on the e46 are like you said front and rear bushes!, i got mine replaced on the rear with powerflex, £45bushes, £90 fitted, and i also did the fronts, now they should never need replacing and the car is now more direct!. as for like for like, the e36 will be a little quicker as its a lighter car, the e46 is a lot stronger and in my opinion looks alot less dated!, either way you will get a good car!

    Cheers pal,

Ideally I would want a standard item. They are really not to my taste.

    I do indeed!

I really want to put up a wanted in the wanted section, but it says I need 100 posts!!

    That's crazy.

Especially as this site is my best bet to find one.
