    Driving style does matter, I always wished they would have made a bigger engined compact.

    the e36 318ti is 140bhp which isn't slow slow!

    40 in a 323!? If you do 55mph with tail wind I think so I would say realistically I get 27-34 but I do not do long runs at the mo as I live 30secs from work.

    I get 31 - 33 from the 328 Touring commuting 30 miles from home to Northampton - a mix of A5, M1 and a few miles urban at either end, not caning it apart from the odd HGV overtake but not exactly babying it either so you might squeeze close on to 40 from a 323 with a little care. Pretty decent economy from the 328 I reckon, my X-Type 2.2 diseasel estate only gives 33 on the same run, but with the 328 you have the added bonus of not feeling like you're driving a grandfather clock.
