Hello, currently in the process of upgrading cars thanks to insurance.

Now I wasn't even considering a bimmer till few people suggested thinking about it.

Originally wanted a hot hatch, was gonna go for a Cupra, Golf or Almera Gti.

Anyway it doesn't matter about that.

I Have a budget of around 1K maybe a little more.

Now can I afford a decent BMW for that, was looking at a E36 but cant have anything to expensive to run however I still want something fairly nippy.
Similar performance to the hot hatches above, was thinking from 320 upwards.

Am I being relistic with this budget, or am I gonna get a bit of a dog???

    Any advice is much appreciate.

you'll be fine mate. i tested a doggy 320 before getting a 325 and its still a straight 6 so as much smooth power as any other 2.0 out there. even the 318is is worth a look for that sort of money. Always check for head gasket failure symptoms as the one i looked at was knackered but still drove very nice. give up on front wheel drive and put some fun in your daily driver mate. best thing i ever got was a bm. now i have 4

Thanks for the heads up, Im pretty familiar with HGF symptoms from my current car, which amazingly has never let me down in 102k.

    Would love something like a 323 coupe,seen a few.

They are amazingly cheap IMO and still look great. Think Ill have to take one for a drive.

    Welcome to the site
You should be able to find a decent E36 for that money, will probably be around the 92-96 year mark. I would go for the 323 or 325 rather than the 320 though. Much better engines

323s are cheaper and if you buy the 325 inlet manifold, it makes it the same car engine power wise. you can get the manifolds for about 100 quid on ebay. get and do some tyre kicking mate. I guarantee you'll fall in love. i did and the first one i drove was a proper heap!!!

K insurance isnt an issue, which im surprised at (as Im only 21) but a bit worried by MPG, 323 may be too expensive to run for me, was hoping for around 30MPG in town and 40 on the motorway

you might get 30 round town and 40 on a motorway if you drive fairly carefully in a 323!
